Alfajore CookiesWhen my granddaughter came home from a summer abroad in Argentina, she brought home with her some Alfajores cookies to share with the family. In Argentina, alfajores are considered their national cookie that is eaten all year long at any time of day.
Havanna was the brand of these wonderful cookies that are coated in chocolate, and each cookie was individually foiled wrapped like a little treasure. My first bite melted in my mouth and reminded me of little moon pies. These cookies were so good and everyone helped polish off the box of cookies.
I needed to find out where I could get more of these cookies, but alas the Havanna brand are difficult to find in the states. They can be ordered online now from Amazon but are very expensive. If you ever go to Argentina, try these wonderful cookies! I have researched and found several cookies recipes for Alfajores and adapted the following recipe.
Plan on setting aside a full afternoon to make these cookies since they take some preparation and assembly work resulting in a very rich tasting cookie. If you can hold off to wait a full day before eating, the taste and texture improves as the Dulce de leche softens the cookie so it melts in your mouth. These can be a wonderful treat for a special occasion or to give as gifts.
