Ingredients:
âś… For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (70/30 or 80/20 blend for flavor)
- 1 medium onion, finely diced
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons oil or butter, for frying
âś… For the Onion Gravy:
- 2 large onions, sliced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup water
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
âś… Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, diced onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix until well combined.
Shape the mixture into 4-6 patties, depending on your desired size.
âś… Cook the Steaks:Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for about 4 minutes on each side, or until they have a nice sear. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside.
âś… Make the Onion Gravy:
In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add the sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until they are browned and caramelized, about 10 minutes.
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir until the onions are coated and the flour is no longer visible.
Slowly pour in the beef broth and soy sauce, stirring constantly. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a simmer.
Stir in the water and continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
âś… Combine and Serve:
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the onion gravy. Cover and simmer on low heat for about 10 minutes to let the flavors meld and the steaks cook through.
Serve the hamburger steaks with a generous spoonful of the onion gravy on top
